This is a very interesting article, well-written as well as informative. I greatly enjoyed reading it even though I obviously don’t agree with everything. But it needs to be said I think that the Soviet Union was hardly a model for managing ethnically distinct populations. When I see “homogenous” in the context of Soviet nationalities policy, I start thinking about Nagorno-Karabakh, the 1944 genocide in Chechnya, and all the other disasters that were created by Soviet policies aiming to create ethnically homogenous territories. However, I had never considered the creation of Israel as an extension of Soviet policy, so I find these details fascinating even though I draw a different conclusion from yours. Anyway thanks for writing this informative piece.
