These are fabulous reading suggestions, seems we have quite similar tastes! I know Aboulela's book well. In fact I started an essay about it that I never got around to finishing. Thanks for reminding me about it -- maybe I will finish it & publish it on Medium. Aboulela herself actually emailed to thank me for mentioning her book in an interview I did--so we definitely have similar tastes !
