Thanks so much for your kind words, Patsy! I could have said a lot more about the poem, but I was limited to 300 words. The humanizing portrayal of the dog seemed distinctive to me in the context of various Muslim traditions treating dogs as dirty. Of course dogs were often loved in practice, but legal regulations don't reflect this. So the poem brings these contradictory portrayals to the surface in a way that is powerful for me, given the background of condemnation.
