Interesting that Millay could write a poem like this during what was (if I am not mistaken) the peak of American power. It is out of tune --in the best possible sense-- with the nationalistic spirit of the age. I particularly appreciate the enjambment in "And fortitude /

Takes muscle; and needs food."
