I appreciate this honest request. If I were to put my argument into a single sentence I would say that collective free speech is concerned with the rights of the other person and not just with our own individuals rights. And that is why a collective conception of free speech is better equipped to fight racism and other discrimination that isn’t directed against us personally. I hope that is clear enough? I have a lot on Medium about free speech (for example my recent piece “Against Balance”) but if you want something short and accessible perhaps this video I did for Al Jazeera?
https://youtu.be/eP1-TC68pJA. If not, then I think the Steven Salaita lecture I discuss in this article may be the most accessible. I really would like to make my point entirely clear though so please let me know if that’s not enough. Thanks for your interest! In addition to your summary in this comment I would say that I am not just saying that we shouldn’t censor but that people often imagine that they are censoring for good reasons and that censorship is needed in order to fight discrimination. I argue that the opposite is the case.
