I write about poetry, politics, translation, Iran, Islam, the Caucasus & Palestine. I grew up in the US, and have lived and worked in Tbilisi, Berlin, Palestine, Budapest, Singapore, and Bristol (UK). Currently, I am Professor, Islamic World & Comparative Literature, at the University of Birmingham in the UK. My books include the award-winning Writers and Rebels: The Literatures of Insurgency in the Caucasus (2016) and The Routledge Handbook of Translation and Activism (2020). Two of my books will be published in Arabic translation in 2021, and my other works have been translated into Persian, Chinese, Russian, German, French, Spanish, Polish, and Portuguese. I have translated Persian classical and modern poetry (most often in collaboration with Iranian poet Kayvan Tahmasebian) as well as Georgian and Russian poetry and prose.
